GUA SHA

Gua sha, an ancient Chinese healing technique, has been used for centuries to promote health and well-being. Traditionally, gua sha involves using a smooth-edged tool, such as a jade or rose quartz stone, to gently scrape or press the skin in specific areas of the body to promote circulation and relieve tension. Below are steps to traditional gua sha practice:


Preparation:

  1. Choose the Right Tool: Select a gua sha tool made from a smooth, non-porous material like jade, rose quartz, or buffalo horn. These materials are believed to have healing properties and glide smoothly over the skin.

  2. Prep the Skin: Cleanse your skin thoroughly and apply a thin layer of oil or lotion to create a smooth surface for the gua sha tool to glide over. This helps reduce friction and prevents irritation.

Technique:

  1. Identify Areas of Tension: Use your fingers to locate areas of tension or discomfort on the body. Common areas include the neck, shoulders, back, arms, and legs.

  2. Apply Gentle Pressure: Hold the gua sha tool at a comfortable angle and apply gentle pressure to the skin. Start with light pressure and gradually increase as needed, but avoid applying too much force to prevent bruising or discomfort.

  3. Scrape or Press: Use smooth, sweeping motions to scrape or press the skin in one direction, moving away from the center of the body. You can use short or long strokes, depending on the area being treated.

  4. Follow Meridian Lines: In traditional Chinese medicine, it's believed that energy, or qi, flows through specific meridian lines in the body. When practicing gua sha, follow these meridian lines to promote the smooth flow of qi and restore balance to the body.

  5. Repeat as Needed: Continue the gua sha practice for several minutes, focusing on areas of tension or discomfort. You can repeat the process multiple times throughout the day or as part of your regular self-care routine.

Aftercare:

  1. Hydrate: After completing the gua sha session, drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins and promote hydration from within.

  2. Moisturize: Apply a soothing moisturizer or hydrating serum to the skin to nourish and protect it after the gua sha treatment.

  3. Clean the Tool: Rinse the gua sha tool with warm water and mild soap after each use to keep it clean and free of bacteria.


By following these traditional gua sha techniques, you can experience the therapeutic benefits of this ancient healing practice and promote relaxation, circulation, and overall well-being.


Caution: Always use right judgement and sense-fulness. The area on the skin that is more red than another area indicates that stagnation is being lifted which will bring circulation back. Usually, balance will restore after a gua sha. You could use it to dissipate scar tissues as well. Do not attempt while having high blood pressure.


Gua sha could also bring blood flow to your face/skin for a more vibrant skin.
