ARROWROOT

Updated: Jun 20

Arrowroot, a starchy substance extracted from the rhizomes of various tropical plants, particularly Maranta arundinacea, offers several potential health benefits and culinary uses:

  1. Digestive health: Arrowroot is known for its gentle and soothing effect on the digestive system. It can be used to alleviate symptoms of digestive discomfort, such as diarrhea, as it forms a gel-like substance in the digestive tract that helps to absorb excess water and firm up stools.

  2. Gluten-free alternative: Arrowroot flour is a popular gluten-free substitute for wheat flour in cooking and baking. It is often used in gluten-free recipes to thicken sauces, soups, and gravies, as well as to make gluten-free baked goods like cookies, cakes, and bread.

  3. Nutrient content: While arrowroot is primarily composed of carbohydrates, it also contains some beneficial nutrients, including potassium, iron, and B vitamins like niacin (vitamin B3) and folate (vitamin B9). However, it is not a significant source of these nutrients compared to other foods.

  4. Low calorie and easily digestible: Arrowroot is relatively low in calories and fat, making it a suitable option for individuals looking to manage their weight or follow a low-fat diet. Additionally, its mild flavor and easy digestibility make it a gentle food for sensitive stomachs or those with dietary restrictions.

  5. Skin care: Arrowroot powder is sometimes used in natural skincare products for its absorbent and soothing properties. It can be applied topically to the skin to help absorb excess oil, soothe irritation, and promote a soft, smooth complexion. Arrowroot powder is often found in talc-free body powders, dry shampoos, and natural deodorants.

  6. Potential blood sugar control: Some research suggests that arrowroot may have a beneficial effect on blood sugar levels due to its high resistant starch content. Resistant starch is a type of carbohydrate that resists digestion in the small intestine and may help improve insulin sensitivity and glycemic control.

While arrowroot offers these potential benefits, it's important to note that scientific research on its health effects is limited, and individual responses can vary. Additionally, some people may have allergies or sensitivities to arrowroot, so it's advisable to use it in moderation and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.

Whenever my body feels hot inside, or my stomach doesn't feel good, I would mix a TBSP with some water, then cook it to a gluey consistency. I would add some sugar and voila!

Caution: to not eat it hot and go outside in the wind right away.
